The Acura MDX vs Honda Pilot question comes up often, because the two come from the same company and share a lot under the skin. Acura is Honda's luxury brand, and both three-row SUVs use a 3.5-liter V6 and a 10-speed automatic. The 2026 Honda Pilot starts at $42,195, seats up to eight and costs less to buy. The 2026 Acura MDX starts at $51,800 and adds a more upscale cabin, available SH-AWD, a longer warranty and a 355-hp Type S. The short answer: Pilot for space and value, MDX for luxury and driving feel.

Quick Verdict

MDX or Pilot: The Short Answer

  • Choose the 2026 Acura MDX if you want a premium cabin, Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), a 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and the option of a 355-hp turbocharged Type S.
  • Choose the 2026 Honda Pilot if you want eight seats with a removable second-row middle seat, a lower $42,195 starting price and a freshly updated 12.3-inch touchscreen with Google built-in.
  • Bottom line for NYC: the Pilot is the practical family hauler; the MDX is for drivers who want luxury and handling and are fine with seven seats.

Same family, different brands: The 2026 Acura MDX carries over from the 2025 refresh, which replaced the old touchpad with a 12.3-inch touchscreen. The 2026 Honda Pilot is refreshed for 2026 with a new grille, larger screens and a quieter cabin.

Price and Value

The Honda Pilot costs less. The 2026 Pilot Sport starts at $42,195, about $9,600 below the 2026 Acura MDX at $51,800. Look at it another way, though, and the gap closes: a top Pilot Black Edition at $54,995 costs about the same as an MDX with SH-AWD at $54,000. The question is whether you want a fully loaded Honda or a well-equipped Acura.

Performance, Handling and Fuel Economy

Both run a 3.5-liter V6 with a 10-speed automatic, and the numbers are close: 290 hp and 267 lb-ft in the MDX, 285 hp and 262 lb-ft in the Pilot. The difference is in how they drive. The MDX has sportier suspension tuning and available Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, which sends more power to the outside rear wheel in corners and helps on wet or snowy roads like the Belt Parkway in winter.

Want more power? Only the MDX offers it. The Type S uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with 355 hp and 354 lb-ft, plus air suspension. Fuel economy is nearly identical for the regular V6 models, about 21 to 22 mpg combined, while the Type S is rated 19 mpg combined. Both tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped, although front-wheel-drive MDX models are rated at 3,500 pounds.

Space and Seating

This is where the Pilot pulls ahead. Most Pilot trims seat eight, and the second-row middle seat can be removed and stored under the cargo floor, turning the bench into captain's chairs with a walkway to the third row. The TrailSport seats seven. The MDX seats up to seven, with a cabin focused more on comfort and materials than on maximum capacity.

The two are close in size: the MDX is 198.4 inches long and the Pilot 199.9 inches, so both fit a standard city parking space. Weighing the Pilot against another popular family SUV? See our Honda Pilot vs Kia Telluride comparison.

Interior, Tech and Comfort

The MDX feels more upscale inside, with richer materials, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and available ELS Studio 3D premium audio. Since its 2025 update, the MDX uses a 12.3-inch touchscreen instead of the old touchpad. The 2026 Pilot narrows the gap with its own 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 10.2-inch driver display, Google built-in apps, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a quieter cabin than before.

Both let in plenty of light. A panoramic moonroof is standard on every MDX, while the Pilot gets one on the Touring trim and above.

Ownership Costs and Reliability

Acura offers the longer warranty: 4 years or 50,000 miles of basic coverage and 6 years or 70,000 miles on the powertrain, versus 3 years/36,000 miles and 5 years/60,000 miles for Honda. Both brands have strong reputations for reliability and resale value. The Pilot costs less to buy, while the MDX's longer coverage adds peace of mind.
