Top 10: Things to Keep in Your Car!

By admin | Posted in News, Parts & Accessories, Safety on Saturday, January 21st, 2012 at 4:26 PM

If you’re looking for a Car Parts in Brooklyn or Used Car Parts Brooklyn, Plaza Auto Mall is the place to go! But, Plaza Auto Mall doesn’t just want to sell you the car of your dreams, but help you enhance your driving experience! Here’s the Top 10 items you should keep in your vehicle when driving your new car in and out of New York! Most of these car accessories Brooklyn are available in our Honda Parts Brooklyn, Acura Parts Brooklyn, Hyundai Parts Brooklyn, Toyota Parts Brooklyn departments.

Hope for the best and plan for the worst. The simple saying with complex details is so often thought of relative to your career or finances, and rightly so, though it shouldn’t be overlooked in regard to your car. Even if you keep some travel-size supplies aboard for emergency grooming purposes, don’t overlook things for the car itself. Your cell phone is a must, but alone it can’t bail you out of every sticky situation. On the other hand, it doesn’t make sense to stash a few hundred pounds of provisions for everyday driving or even road trips. Strike a sensible balance with our top 10 things to keep in your car.

#10. Tire Gauge

A minute of your time every week can save hours if ever stranded, and it’s as easy as keeping a tire gauge in your car.  It’s fundamentally simple and obvious that a small patch of tire at each corner is your only connection to the road. What’s less realized is how critical proper inflation is to car safety and tire wear. Take a huge step toward preventing nastiness by using a tire gauge (digital is best and still reasonably priced) when tires are cold — before you drive. The ideal pressure will be indicated not on the tire itself but the driver’s doorjamb and in your owner’s manual.

#9. Oil

Even if your car runs perfectly fine, doesn’t smoke like a Russian teen, and you don’t have to top off the oil every time you gas up, keep a quart or two of oil ready. You won’t be able to forgo checking the dipstick often, the way you normally should. Instead, this emergency supply can be added roadside and allow you to limp your car to a safer place should the unforeseen happen. It‘s even more critical if yours is one of the many new cars requiring a specific kind of oil.

Change the Oil in your vehicle today! Use Plaza’s online Coupons by clicking here.

#8. Cell Phone Charger

Most of the cars we sell have phone docking and charging capability as a standard feature, which we hope to see more manufacturers offer in all trim levels. If this isn’t built in on your car, have a basic charger on hand, and use it often. If your car quits and you have to deal with a dead car battery, you might not have the ability to charge a drained phone.

#7. Flashlight

Yes, there is an iPhone app for a flashlight, and it can be extremely handy to have when the situation is inconvenient but not necessarily dire. It still doesn’t hold a candle to a proper flashlight, since it’s another big battery drain that was never really intended for use around a hot engine or poking around under a vehicle. Drop it once, game over. A good flashlight can withstand that and more while letting off more light.

#6. Flat Tire Fixer

To save on expenses, space or weight, several new cars don’t have spare tires. They rely on either run-flats or sealant in a can. The latter isn’t bad to have regardless of how your car’s equipped, since even spares lose air when they’re left unchecked or can fail once in use. The products can be found with various brand names, but they more or less have the same functions of sealing and inflating. Certainly a convenience and potentially a must-have when the surface isn’t stable enough for a car jack or there isn’t the time and space to safely change your tire with traffic whizzing by just inches away. Just be sure the one you’re buying is compatible with your tire type and won’t damage your tire pressure monitoring system once equipped.

#5. Booster Cables

Here’s another no-brainer for New Yorkers who winterize their cars annually, but even the those with the best vehicle upkeep need a boost now and then. As with some other things to keep in your car, check your owner’s manual to confirm the type of cables or booster system you can safely use. The traditional four-clamp setup may not be an option, or there may be specific points in your engine bay to serve as connectors, as opposed to the battery posts themselves. Just understand that a jump start is rarely the end of your problems; if you need it once, you’ll probably need it again unless other issues are addressed.

Shop any of our Plaza Parts Departments for model compatible jumper cables!

#.4 GPS & Map

If your car doesn’t have a built-in navigation system, keep a portable GPS with you. Just don’t rule out having a map onboard. As good as factory and portable GPS units are, they still sometimes flake out or can’t grab a signal. Besides, if your car’s out of power, you’re out of luck. Even if your phone has the capability, signal strength could again pose an issue. With a map, your biggest problem is folding the thing properly, which really is just another lost art anyway.

Discounts on GPS system on our Online Parts and Accessories store: www.PlazaParts.com or
visit
Plaza Honda/Hyundai Parts on Nostrand Avenue!

#3 First Aid Kit

With roadside surgeries at an all-time low, you don’t have to keep an elaborate arsenal of medical gear in your trunk, but, until help arrives, a small kit of the essentials can make a big difference. Things like bandages, burn cream, antibacterial ointment, and pain reliever aren’t just things you will need for a family vacation. A poncho’s helpful too, functional as a makeshift blanket or to keep you dry when you’re stuck in the rain. Finally, a small extinguisher designed for automotive use keeps minor electrical and engine fires from getting out of hand.

#2. Food & Water

Food and water are things to keep in your car wherever you live or travel. Nothing elaborate here — you’re not hauling around four-course meals for five. The idea is that you’ll have the bare minimum to keep you going when help could be many hours away or the weather extreme. Compact, healthy foods with long shelf lives, like energy or protein bars, are great choices. Have a few bottles of water, and replace them all from time to time.

#1. Insurance Info & Vehicle Registration

Any meeting of metal is never good, but being able to contact your insurance carrier and exchange information helps. As for registration, it seems fundamental to have proof that you, your car and its license plates all belong together. Some guys get lazy and fail to put their registration in the glove box, while others have purposely taken it out to minimize the threat of identify theft. The latter could be a legit concern, but chances are your state laws require it.

Most of these must-haves are available here at Plaza Auto Mall on Nostrand Avenue (Including Vehicle Insurance at our on-site Insurance company, located in our Honda showroom!) Visit our Parts Department or order any part or accessory for your vehicle on our Online Parts Super Store. 20% OFF All items, any make, any model!

Honda & Toyota Tie For “Most American Car” Title

By admin | Posted in Honda, News, Toyota on Thursday, July 14th, 2011 at 6:20 PM

The two most American cars aren’t, well, American, according to a new ranking by our friends at Cars.com. Both the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry — two sedans from the two biggest Japanese automakers — are “more American” than General Motors’ Chevrolet Malibu and other vehicles from the Big Three.

The annual American-Made Index by Cars.com ranks the most-American vehicles based on what percentage of their parts are made here in the U.S., where they’re assembly, and how many are sold to Americans.

“In today’s global economy, there’s not an easy way to determine just how American a car is,” said Patrick Olsen, Cars.com editor in chief. “Most cars built in the U.S., for example, are assembled using at least some parts that come from somewhere else. Additionally, many U.S. automakers assemble vehicles in Canada and Mexico, while foreign automakers have opened plants on U.S. soil. Our index is another resource that car buyers can use to help guide their purchase decision.”

Both the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry are made with 80 percent of their parts coming from the United States. And, most of the models sold here are made here.

“Despite the disaster in Japan, and General Motors usurping Toyota as the world’s largest automaker, we’re not surprised to see the Camry in the No. 1 position again,” said Olsen. “The Camry remains an incredibly popular vehicle, and higher total sales require a higher number of U.S. factory workers and a larger number of U.S. suppliers – all of which contribute to Toyota’s ranking.”

Check out 2011 model year vehicles to see their percentage of domestic parts.

  1. Toyota Camry: 80%.
  2. Honda Accord: 80%.
  3. Chevrolet Malibu: 75%.
  4. Ford Explorer: 85%.
  5. Honda Odyssey: 75%.
  6. Toyota Sienna: 75%.
  7. Jeep Wrangler: 78% for 2-door, 79% for 4-door.
  8. Chevrolet Traverse: 75%.
  9. Toyota Tundra: 80%.
  10. GMC Acadia: 75%.

Car Warning Lights NOT to be Ignored

By admin | Posted in Safety on Friday, April 8th, 2011 at 6:19 PM

Warning lights are there for a reason. They are there to warn you of an impending problem. If left unchecked or ignored you might need costly car repair. When you see a warning light, you don’t need to panic, but you do need to do something about it. A look at the warning lights that you cannot ignore.

  • Oil Pressure. The oil pressure light normally looks like a small oil can and is almost always red. The oil pressure light will come on when your engine is low on oil, or the oil pressure in the engine is too low for safe use. Low oil pressure can result in severe engine damage very fast, and you cannot afford to ignore this for long. You should pull over and check the oil level in your car with the dipstick. Adding oil will be essential and should have been taken care of in your last car service. Sometimes we might need to top oil up, and checking your oil level regularly is recommended. If the oil light comes back on you may have serious problems.
  • Temperature. The temperature light is always red. This is an indication of how serious the issue is. The temperature light will come on if your engine is overheating. You should stop driving your car immediately. The next step is to check the coolant level is sufficient only once your engine has cooled down. This make take 30 minutes or more. If your engine is overheating and left unchecked even for a short amount of time, extensive damage is possible. This can result in costly to repair.
  • Battery. This light is normally orange. It indicates when you have a problem related to the electrical system of your car. A car’s engine will normally keep the battery charged. It may mean that your battery needs replacing. You might only need simple solutions or you have more serious problems. While not as urgent as other warning lights you should be on the look out for a repair shop soon. You will have problems starting your car soon enough. This can be problematic with automatic transmissions.
  • Brake. Another red light. We all know what that means. Something very serious is at hand. Anything to do with your brakes is a very important issue. The brake warning light may be on if your parking brake is left on, or it could mean something much more serious. You may be low on brake fluid pressure which will result in your brakes not working. If your brake pedal goes to the floor without any effect, you are in a very serious situation. With manual cars you can use your transmission to slow down, and you should look for an incline to slow your car further. You might need to look for something relatively soft such as a bush to crash to a stop.
  • Low Tyre. This light is normally yellow and an indication that at least one of your tyres is less than 25% inflated. You cannot afford to ignore this. Deflated tyres can result in serious accidents. Stop your car immediately and take the necessary measures.

Warning lights should be regularly checked, and faulty lights or connections need to be replaced immediately. You are relying on them.

Toyota, Honda Extend Shutdowns, Rivals Resume Output After Quake

By admin | Posted in Events, News on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011 at 3:07 PM

TOKYO — Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. extended factory shutdowns through this weekend, while smaller Japanese automakers resumed limited production following the country’s March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Toyota and Honda, which together account for the bulk of the closed assembly plants, said today that parts shortages would keep their factories closed longer than previously forecast.

Toyota, which had originally suspended production through today, said it would shutter its 18 domestic assembly plants, including those run by affiliates, through March 26.

Likewise, Honda — which has an assembly plant and r&d center in the disaster area — said it would suspend production through March 27. It had earlier said operations would be shuttered through Wednesday.

The extended shutdowns will continue to stifle the output of some of those companies’ main exports to the United States, including the Toyota Corolla, Prius, and RAV4 as well as the Honda Fit and CR-V. Affected vehicles also include the Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester and Infiniti, Acura and Lexus models.

Other companies showed fitful signs of coming back to life, following across-the-board shutdowns in the wake of the killer 9.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Japan on 11 days ago.

Nissan Motor Co., which still has five plants closed by the quake, said it is aiming for a March 24 restart of all of them. This would include the Tochigi assembly plant in the quake zone, which makes Infiniti products as well as the 350Z and GT-R sports cars.

Other carmakers resumed temporary production — as long as part supplies last.

Mitsubishi had its three assembly plants in operation today. It was using parts that had already been made before the earthquake but couldn’t be delivered sooner because of bad roads.

The company still has five or six suppliers in the quake zone that aren’t operating.

As a result, Mitsubishi is suspending production indefinitely from Wednesday.

Mazda was also back online today — but only temporarily. It resumed production of replacement parts and parts for overseas factories at its two assembly plants. It also resumed production of vehicles that could be completed with parts already in stock.

Mazda did not say what models it would build or how long the stock of parts would hold out. It was too early to say when full production would resume, Mazda said.

Suzuki, which only produces a trickle of cars for the United States, also resumed auto production today, though with a half-shift of downtime. It plans the same on Wednesday. Operation from Thursday is still up in the air, however.

Like Mazda, Suzuki was moving to complete vehicles already in-process with existing inventory of parts and component. Says Suzuki spokesman Hideki Taguchi: “That means it is not the ‘resumption of production’ in the real sense of the term.”

Meanwhile, Subaru parent company Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. has suspended vehicle assembly until at least Thursday. It plans to resume parts production for overseas factories on Wednesday and spare parts production on Thursday.

Toyota, Nissan, Honda halt Japan output

By admin | Posted in Events, News, Safety on Monday, March 14th, 2011 at 11:16 AM

By: The Detroit News

Japan’s leading automakers are suspending production at their domestic plants on Monday as they assess the condition of their factories and parts suppliers after Friday’s devastating earthquake and tsunami.

They did not say when they would resume production.

Toyota Motor Corp., Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. reported damage to more than a dozen plants and facilities, mostly in and around the hardest-hit Tohoku region more than 200 miles north of Tokyo.

Japan’s industrial heartland in the central part of Honshu island wasn’t hit as hard, however, by the quake and wasn’t struck by the tsunami that caused most of the devastation in the northeastern region and in parts of Hokkaido island, farther to the north.

Toyota’s big plants southwest of Tokyo were able to resume operations Friday, but the automaker is halting its domestic output for Monday as the country grapples with what Prime Minister Naoto Kan called the biggest crisis since World War II.

“Toyota has decided to suspend production at all Toyota Motor Corp. plants, as well as all subsidiary vehicle-manufacturing plants on Monday,” the automaker said.

On Friday, it reported damage at four subsidiary, or part-owned, plants in areas hit by the quake and subsequent tidal surge. The employees had been evacuated.

“We are now conducting a detailed survey of each plant to determine the extent of any damage,” Toyota said in a statement. “We are also assessing the situation at our suppliers, dealers and the impact on North American import vehicles.”

Two of the four affected subsidiary plants produce Scion xB and xD models, as well as small Toyota Yaris cars.

Nissan, Japan’s second-largest carmaker, also suspended production as it reviewed its operations.

“Our first priority on Friday was, are our people OK?” said Nissan communications and marketing director Simon Sproule. “What’s uncertain now is the extent of the damage to suppliers, particularly small suppliers in remote areas. That’s what we’re looking at now.”

As to when production will resume, Nissan said in a statement: “No decision has been made as we are continuing to assess the damage to our facilities and equipment, as well as discussing parts delivery with our suppliers.”

At least six of its plants suffered some damage to buildings and equipment, as did some of its facilities on the Pacific coast.

Nissan said 1,300 U.S.-bound vehicles were damaged at the port of Hitachi, north of Tokyo, and another 1,000 at the Miyagi Service Center suffered damage when the tsunami swept ashore.

Honda said its two main assembly plants will be closed Monday as well as several components factories. The Sayama plant, which turns out CR-V, Accord, U.S. Fit, Acura RL and TSX models, also was closed Friday. Honda’s Suzuka plant, which produces the Civic, Civic Hybrid, Insight and hybrid CR-Z, was operating on Friday but will be closed Monday.

Honda said the disruptions in Japan would not have an immediate impact on its North American operations, which produce 90 percent of the vehicles Honda sells in the United States. The majority of Toyota’s U.S. Sales also are produced in North America.

“It is too early to fully assess the implications of this week’s very tragic events in Japan,” Itay Michaeli, auto analyst at Citi Investment Research & Analysis, wrote in a report issued Sunday.

He said that out of the total annual Japanese vehicle exports of 4.8 million, more than 1.6 million are shipped to the United States.

“Key questions now include the extent of production shutdowns and related supply chain issues — conditions at ports, available air freight for outgoing components,” he said. “For now, Japanese automakers have roughly a 60-day U.S. supply of vehicles.”

Go Hands-Free, or Risk Points on Your License

By admin | Posted in Safety on Thursday, February 17th, 2011 at 10:33 PM
By Andy Newman @ The New York Times

Drivers, put down your phones, for the good of your licenses. Starting February 16th, a ticket in New York State for talking on a cellphone while driving will cost you two points, in addition to the $100 it has cost since 2001, way back when New York became the first state in the nation to ban hand-held phone use while driving.

Using a hands-free device remains legal.

The new rule brings the talking law in line with the texting-while-driving law, which since 2009 has imposed a two-point penalty and a fine of $150.

According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, driver distraction is a factor in at least 20 percent of crashes in New York. Each year, more than 300,000 tickets are issued statewide for violations involving cellphone use.
